Carlsbad, California – May 16, 2012. Golnar Fozi and Neal Meyers, of the law firm of Meyers Fozi, LLP, have secured a defense verdict in the trial of Willis v. Double Honor Insurance Services.
Plaintiff sued an insurance company specializing in selling insurance to churches and faith-based organizations, claiming she was fired for supposedly reporting other employees’ concerns of religious discrimination and harassment. Plaintiff contended that she had reported staff concerns regarding prayers in the workplace, Christian music in the office, and the potential sublease of space to another Christian-owned business. She sought damages for past and future lost earnings and emotional distress.
Plaintiff, had the burden of proving that she was terminated in retaliation for reporting what she believed was religious discrimination and harassment. Defendant showed that plaintiff did not report discrimination or harassment, and that there was a valid business reason for the termination consisting of plaintiff’s poor attitude toward other employees, including the owners of the business.
The matter proceeded to trial in the San Diego Superior Court, North County Division, Hon. Tamilla Ipema, judge presiding. A panel of 12 jurors heard approximately one week of testimony and argument, and returned a defense verdict for Double Honor Insurance. Plaintiff’s motion for new trial was denied, and costs were awarded against her.
